DETROIT (WWJ) – The ex-mayor of Detroit, recently convicted in connection with racketeering, is asking a federal court to release him on bond.
Kwame Kilpatrick is asking the court to release him until sentencing so that he can spend time with his wife and children in Texas before beginning his prison sentence.
“There’s a presumption that when you are convicted you lose your right to freedom,” said WWJ’s Legal Analyst Charlie Langton. “Especially when you are convicted of racketeering and extortion and bribery. No, Kilpatrick is not going to win this motion, I’d be very surprised if Judge Edmund says ‘okay, go home for a little vacation.’”
Last week Kilpatrick was convicted on 24 counts of racketeering, mail fraud and other charges and was immediately remanded to the Milan Federal Correctional Facility by U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Edmunds.
Kilpatrick states in his motion to the court that he doesn’t have money and is not a flight risk or a danger to the community.
